Composing a choreography…

Earlier this week I visited Sevenoaks to work with Digital Tattoo’s composer Tom Sayers. Coming from a background of making film music and sound design and being completely new to composing for dance I was really looking forward to developing our collaborative relationship and learning off of each other.

Working in Tom’s studio, we talked through each section deciding what we thought it needed, (sound design or music), the feel of the composition and the length of each section. Due to the short turnaround time, it was important that we were both on the same page about each idea being conveyed in each sections and the feel of the compositional pieces.

What drew me to work with Tom was that I found him really refreshing because he has not seen very much contemporary dance and therefore what other composers for dance works are making. He is also really connected with the subject matter, wanting to not just create, but to read and research around the topic, developing his understanding and thoughts around the theme throughout the process.

To find out more about Tom, read his biography below:

Tom Sayers is primarily a sound designer for film, but has always had a passion for composing music.

His many sound design credits include the Danny Boyle film “Slumdog Millionaire”, for which he was awarded a BAFTA for Best Sound and an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing.

Tom has recently been working as music editor on the acclaimed French TV series “Les Revenants” (“The Returned”). He hopes that the score for “Digital Tattoo” manages to blend both his passions for sound design and music together.
